Gratitude

Image
By Theo Thanksgiving in our house stands for two things. It marks the anniversary of our move from the city to connecticut (2 years and counting). It's also when each member of our family shares what they are thankful for.  I was preparing my gratitude list and here's what I have so far. I'm grateful for: - the health of my entire family - hubbie's commitment to our vows - the times when the whole family laughs together - new friendships - my children's love - the opportunities I've had to learn and push myself What strikes me is that the things I'm grateful for are not tied to a geographic space. The list would be the same if I were in the city!  What are you the most grateful for this Thanksgiving?

Fall Clean Up

I don't know what you're up to in the city but out here in the burbs we're in the midst of season denial . Let me explain. Fall is upon us and that means hundreds of leaves are falling all around us. I'm sure you're picturing a scenic view of red and yellow leaves sprinkled around a picturesque new england home. Not! The number one preoccupation in the burbs right now, is disposing of those leaves so that the lawns look like it's spring and not the fall! If there was ever a more annoying and futile occupation than raking leaves I'm not sure I've encountered it. Basically as soon as you finish you have to start all over again. So what are one's options? 1. Rake them yourselves, put them in lawn bags and schlep them to the nearest pick up point.  Let me give you an idea of the number bags we're talking about: 2 hours of raking yields about 12 bags! We've been very fortunate to have various family members like my dad and father-in-law hel

Modernism in the burb

The Sculpture House Philip Johnson Private Art Collection Viewing Bunker One of the things I miss the most about the city is the endless places to view art of all kinds. Happy to report that this week I got my dose of modern art without the leaving Fairfield County! I visited Philip Johnson's Glass House located in New Canaan.  If you make your way out here, don't miss it. ( http://philipjohnsonglasshouse.org ) Inside Glass House

Tears in the burbs

I am overcome with emotion. I don't ever recall bursting into tears in a supermarket but I came pretty darn close today. I just visited the new Fairway supermarket in Stamford, CT!  http://www.fairwaymarket.com/stamford.html I know what you're thinking....how sad is your life that you can get this emotional over a supermarket? This is no supermarket. This IS going to change my life. In fact, this is the best thing that's happened to me in the burbs. One of the worst things about living in the burbs was the lack of good gourmet/international/varied foods available and the close second was having to drive to four different places for different things on my grocery shopping list. Stew's for fruits and veggies, Pagano's for fish, Costco's for household products...etc. Well those days are over baby! Fairway is heaven! In one place you get: Beautiful and varied organic fruits and veggies A huge selection of meat and fish 50 different kinds of coffee be
