School Nurse in Suburbia
On Monday afternoon, I get a call from the school nurse.
Like everyone else I dread them.
So I really appreciate the fact that our school nurse always start her message by saying "it's the school nurse, nothing serious just..." because then I can take a deep breath and listen to the rest of the message.
Anyway here's the message I got on Monday.
"Hi Sophie, this is the school nurse, nothing serious just wanted to let you know that your first grader got stung by a bee in music class. He was pretty upset but I made a special paste for him and he's doing better now. The real reason I'm calling is because I thought you would appreciate knowing that your fourth grader heard the cries of his brother from his classroom and said to his teacher "I know that cry, it's my brother and I need to check and see if he's ok." So the teacher brought him to my office and he comforted his brother and they shared stories about getting stung by bees. I thought you would appreciate knowing there is such a great bond between them."
Ok I just have to say I never ever would have gotten that message from our nurse in the city. In fact, I'm pretty sure my son suffered a hit to the head and I didn't hear about it until he got home!
It's so amazing to me that when you live in a smaller community you really get personal and thoughtful attention. Feeling very grateful that my sons have the opportunity to go to school in such a personal and caring environment (and in case you're wondering, yeap it's a public school).

It was really quite wonderful watching the older GOONYC's kid come bursting in to see what was wrong with his younger brother. Loved it! Ya done good, mama! (And papa, too, I'm sure.)
ReplyDeleteAhhhh...brotherly bonds. I know all about them. Thanks for sharing.
